What is Composition?

Updated: May 21, 2022

Composition applies to all types of art! Anything from music, dance, painting, and drawing. When we talk about composition, we refer to the resulting overall effect from how all of its parts come together. In the art world, these parts are referred to as the elements of art according to the principles of art.

Through a composition, an artist directs their viewer through their artwork. Thoughtful composition tells the viewer what's important and what they should ignore. There are some general guidelines to keep in mind when composing subjects. For example, a very popular composition guideline is the rule of thirds, which means placing your main subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the two thirds more open.
