Tonal Drawing

Updated: May 21, 2022

When we draw an object we are describing it's tones. Tone means how light or dark something is. This is on a scale from the lightest of whites to the darkest of blacks. Through the gradual increase or decrease of our strokes, we can see our subject's shape or texture.

In a black and white drawing, the color values of the subject are represented through these tones. This is best known as the value scale.

Tones are a very important element in creating representational art. Working with tonal drawing is an excellent opportunity for an artist to exercise their observation skills! To develop and hone skills in drawing, we offer classes for children and teens. Come and join us in our studio for artists by artists!
