All About Fabric

Catching the delicate folds , texture like silk or roughness of fabric can be quite tricky. There's a lot of observing when sketching/painting the drape, wrinkles of the different materials and much more. Techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling are used to create these textures that we see on fabrics. Techniques that our students were taught the first day of class, and use all theme in their sketching or artwork.

Inside the Studio

The month of October our students will learn all about fabrics. They will start from the beginning and will finish the month of October being fully capable of sketching/painting fabric.

WEEK 1: The first week they are learning four simple steps that they will be working on for 4 weeks.

  • STEP 1: MARK THE MOST PROMINENT LINES & PLACE SHADOWS

  • STEP 2: DEEPEN THE DARKEST SHADOWS

  • STEP 3: FILL IN MIDDLE TONES

  • STEP 4: ERASE HIGHLIGHTS

WEEKS 2,3 & 4: Students will be working on these steps with their art instructors.

Throughout the month, our students learn how important following and taking their time with sketching is. Art can be very time consuming, which is why every detail is important. When doing fabric, following these steps is very important.
